A photograph of the problem, and of the fixture or unit involved — for a water heater, the label with the model and serial number tells us the age, the capacity and whether parts are still available before we leave the shop. Whether the property is a house, a condo or a commercial unit, since that changes who is responsible for what. Whether you have found your main shutoff. And for anything below ground, whether the line has been worked on before — a previous repair is usually where the next problem is.
